Monster Monday - Bongo-Bongo

The party enters cautiously into the shadow-shrouded room, glancing about the cavern for any sign of a foe. To their surprise, a pair of hands slowly descended from the ceiling to begin delivering a beat that shook the very ground. As the band tried to keep their footing, the wizard managed to mutter an incantation that revealed the looming, shadowy presence floating above the hands. The crimson eye seemed to focus on him before a deathly howl shook through the room and the hands ceased their beat to smash towards the adventurers.

I've mentioned before that I've never played any of the Legend of Zelda games, but I've been wanting to do something other than Monster Hunter creatures (I will return to them - there's too many cool ones left not to) and this suggestion came up. I was really perplexed as on how to approach this creature with its strange invulnerability - save for his hands. While trying to keep that aspect of it intact while building this creature, I also had to balance his health and AC. I went for a lower AC, but his hp ended up being higher than I initially planned with balancing elsewhere. Looking at other incorporeal creatures, there was at least one or two that had similarly high hp, and I wanted its hands to have high enough hp that they wouldn't be destroyed in a single normal hit. I did also want to make sure players would have a means of countering its invisibility at the level they encountered it. Offensively, I include its ability to grab enemies and try to crush them to death with its constrict ability while it can use living ammunition, borrowed from the abysogh, to lob opponents that it grabs. It can disrupt creatures moving across the ground with its bongo beats, in the same manner that he drums the arena that Link faces him in. I went into the Cleave line of feats to emulate his big, swiping attacks.

Pathfinder 1e:

Didn't really have to change that much for the Pathfinder 2e version. I speculated at its origin mostly to give people a way to play around with its motivations when using it.
