Full Build Friday - Lux, Lady of Luminosity

I'm happy to shine a light on this build, which I think was pretty fun. I feel like I've been doing lots of caster builds lately - which isn't remotely bad, just slightly unusual. As always, this build is conceptualized entirely in a vacuum, with choices made in my best attempt to fit the character. These choice may not hold up in a campaign with different themes and should be adjusted accordingly.

Let's get into the build for Lux, Lady of Luminosity from League of Legends!

BUILD GOALS

o    Luxanna is from a noble family in magic-fearing Demacia, which forces her to keep her innate magic a secret though she seeks to change her homeland

o    She is ranged mage in the game of League, classified as artillery and burst in reference to her range and her ability to lock down and blow up a lone target in a devastating barrage

o    Through Illumination, Lux marks her enemies with her spells, which she can consume with her basic attacks to deal extra damage

o    Light Binding fires a line that damages and roots the first two enemies hit

o    She has a defensive option with Prismatic Barrier, which shields her and all allies touched by her thrown wand

o    Her Lucent Singularity slows enemies within it and can be detonated to deal damage instead

o    With Final Spark, Lux unleashes a massive laser that deals considerable damage to all enemies in its line

Summary of Goals: Lux is an incredibly versatile mage of noble birth who can do everything from locking opponents down to blowing up her enemies to even protecting her allies. She weaves in strikes between her spells to trigger her Illumination and deal additional damage.

Lux feels as though she falls pretty firmly into the human ancestry and uses the skilled heritage so that she can enhance her skills with greater ease. She’ll use Adopted Ancestry to gain access to tangle vine as it immobilizes targets on a critical hit, which is meant to represent her Light Binding. Given her origin as a member of the illustrious Crownguard family, she makes use of the noble background, which nets her Courtly Graces. For her class, I wanted to use the divine spell list, but neither animist, nor cleric, nor oracle really fit her. I settled on sorcerer as this would allow Lux to tap into the divine list and also granted her access to sorcerous potency so that her spells deal more damage – as befitting her role as a burst mage. She uses the angelic bloodline largely as a reference to her ‘Lux: Illuminated’ card in Legends of Runeterra, but she does make legitimate use out of the spells it grants. Its blood magic is also very handy with the protection it provides calling to mind the shield of her Prismatic Barrier if not quite its exact function.

 

In addition to the aforementioned tangle vine, Lux will also want to pick up rousing splash and shield for her Prismatic Barrier, divine lance for a regular damaging cantrip, and light since she is the Lady of Luminosity. Heal comes naturally and purifying icicle simply so that she has a somewhat decent first-rank spell.

Since Lux is an artillery mage, she makes use of both Reach Spell and Widen Spell as the latter, which she acquires through Ancestral Paragon and Natural Ambition, extends the range of her lines and cones. This class block also includes Bespell Strikes, which empowers her attacks after casting a spell, representing her Illumination in reverse. Rather than mark a creature to receive increased damage, this empowers her Strikes and so that she can make proper use of that, I’d have her use a pistol wand. This ensures that she has a ranged Strike while also keeping it as a wand, which she typically wields. Lux explores her innate magic through skill feats such as Trick Magic Item and Arcane Sense while she demonstrates her nation and family’s mistrust of magic through Witch Warden. Her big spell for the block is inner radiance torrent as this is a very early level line effect and it does have a light effect to fit with Lux’s general theme. Holy ray and moonlight ray are also very solid save for the fact that they’re meant for single targets rather than any area effects.

We’re still struggling to cover Prismatic Shield a bit (we’re limited to rousing splash for now), but to feature some defensive for her build, I have Lux taking the Energy Ward class feat. Advanced Bloodline grants her a focus spell with a fly speed, which she’s demonstrated in a few separate instances to justify its inclusion. Through her Multitalented ancestry feat, she’ll gain a Bard Dedication and immediately follow that with some Basic Bard Spellcasting. From this, she gains endure, which is a great fit for her Prismatic Shield since it being a single action means that she’ll be able to shield multiple creatures, and she also finds phantom prison. This is noticeable as an immobilization spell, something that was harder to find than I thought it would be while being something that she can use to partially mimic Light Binding. She uses bard specifically as many of the spells that she’s seeking are on the occult list and the bard ensures that her DCs for these spells will be same as the DCs for her sorcerer spells, since they are both Charisma-based. From her Courtly Graces, she can gain Leverage Connections to call upon her family or friends in times of duress. She explores her magic more through Assured Identification and Recognize Spell, demonstrating her growing fascination with it. Her general feat for the block is Ride inspired by the equestrian training she received as a noble – she even had a personal horse named Starfire.

 

Fourth rank comes with two massive spells that are honestly very hard to pick between when it comes to signaturing. Whichever you don’t signature now, I would do so at a later level. The first and perhaps more important of these is radiant beam, a line of what I assume to be spirit damage in the remaster that fantastically represents her Final Spark. It even removes magical darkness just like how Final Spark will briefly reveal the affected area and enemies. The other big one at fourth rank is divine wrath, which Lux receives from her very bloodline. The area of this effect and the slow that it leaves on a critical failure can be thought to resemble her Lucent Singularity, but it’s really only a step towards doing so.

Thematically, I think the celestial brand from Greater Bloodline is a fantastic fit for Illumination. However, the extra damage can only be triggered by holy creatures, which is a super small list. I couldn’t even find a way for Lux, as an angelic bloodline sorcerer, to gain the trait and actually benefit from that extra damage. She does however use Expert Bard Spellcasting to get some solid usage out of stagnate time. She uses this to create a slowing area, per her Lucent Singularity, that she can then ‘detonate’ by launching a divine wrath in the affected area. Quick Recognition comes from her Recognize Spell while Calm and Centered is more representative of her role as a support. Both of her general feats are pretty incredible, whether that be Incredible Investiture so that she can wield more magic items and then Incredible Initiative so that she can lay down traps or area effects before her allies get in the way of it. Aerialist serves as her ancestry feat so that she has another way of attaining flight outside of her focus points just in case she wants to use those for more offensive purposes. Of note, this block includes zealous conviction, which is a multi-target temp HP effect to better suit her Prismatic Shield.

Lux explores some more occult spells with Occult Breadth, since she has picked up some very solid options with it, and then Master Bard Spellcasting. The main benefit to this is it will allow her to learn phantom prison as an eighth-rank spell, where it can target multiple creatures just like how Light Binding can entrap two creatures. She closes out her class feats with Bloodline Mutation because just maybe you can convince your GM to let you use the holy trait and grant Lux the chance to take advantage of her celestial brand. You could easily swap this for another capstone feat at your leisure, but I do like this one for some resemblance towards ‘Lux: Illuminated.’ Unified Theory and Break Curse build out of her exploration of magic whereas her Comforting Presence skill feat expands the usefulness of her Calm and Centered, allowing her to allay the fears of companions to then reduce them by 2 herself. When she does so, she’ll want to switch to some more supportive spells, such as bolstering allies with endure or phantasmal protagonist, which is a solid spell. Heroic Presence actually comes in clutch for this build as it provides Lux with an extra casting of zealous conviction with which she can bolster and guard her allies.

FREE ARCHETYPE SUGGESTIONS: A free archetype game may provide Lux with some extra sorcerer feats, such as Quickened Spell for combos or Signature Spell Expansion to expand on her casting options. However, while not quite representative of her base identity, a Lux could use a dip into the Starlit Sentinel Dedication, based off of her Star Guardian skin. From this, the shining starlight attack honestly isn’t bad and Sentinel’s Orbit could also be handy. Otherwise, I’d look at Spell Trickster and adapt Shining Arms to work with the new light spell or use Familiar Master for the familiar associated with her Star Guardian persona.

 

BUILD CONCLUSION

Lux, the Lady of Luminosity, is a skilled human and a sorcerer of the angelic bloodline with the noble background to represent her descent from the Crownguard family. While she started with her family's innate distrust of magic, as we see in the form of Witch Warden, she eventually sought change with investment in the Arcana and Society skill. Her sorcerous potency class feature covers her role as a burst mage while the likes of Reach and Widen Spell aid her in serving as artillery. For her Illumination passive, she relies on the likes of Bespell Strike and a wand pistol to give her the ranged attack that she's looking for while charging up her attacks after casting a spell. It's a bit backwards from how it functions in game, but the idea holds. She uses phantom prison from her Bard Dedication for the rooting of her Light Binding though tangle vine can also immobilize a target on a critical success. There's fewer spells than I thought that granted temporary Hit Points, but Lux can call upon the likes of rousing splash, endure, or zealous conviction for the shield provided by her Prismatic Barrier. Lucent Singularity is a little harder to pull off and requires a combo. Stagnate time can slow enemies caught within it before Lux detonates it by dropping down a divine wrath, which can also potentially slow enemies. Radiant Beam is a fantastic fit for her Final Spark as a vast beam that she blasts enemies with though she could also call upon inner radiance torrent for that effect as well.

 

Lauded as a lady of light, Lux lassoes losers in limiting light and then launches luminous lasers that lance lowlifes and leaves them on the ledge of life and lethality.
