Gonna mix things up a little bit by doing a monster based off of a Magic the Gathering creature this time instead! I've been playing Magic a little bit longer than I've been playing D&D/Pathfinder and it's occasionally fun to marry my two hobbies together like this. I'm proud to present the fungal fury - the mycoloth!
I actually originally received this creature as a request to convert into a monster a while back, but I struggled with how I wanted to work in its devour mechanic. After looking through a bevy of beasts, I finally struck on an idea I liked - the hungry flesh's 'monstrous growth' ability. I used the creature in a game I was running and after really reading the ability, I got an idea for how I could make devour 'work.' While I'm not fully content with how 'sprout saproling' works, I think it's true enough to the card's idea.
Pathfinder 1e Version:
Coming over to the 2e version definitely took some finagling. The lack of a giant simple creature template definitely posed a problem before I decided to look at the enlarge spell for how to make its growth work. I struggled with wording on a couple of abilities, so if any of them are unclear, please let me know and I'll endeavor to fix them!
Pathfinder 2e version:
I know there's already some official monster conversions of MtG creatures in D&D 5e, but I don't think they got the mycoloth, so here's Blue's version of it!
Blue's D&D 5e Version (https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/XSVlrnPq):
ENCOUNTER HOOKS
Mean Green: A colony upon the fringes of a primeval forest have been suffering a rash of thefts and other strange crimes. At first the villagers don’t pay it much mind as they have bigger concerns with establishing a foothold in the land, but then livestock begins to go missing. When the heroes are hired to investigate, they discover that the culprits are none other than a horde of saprolings – that are working for a mycoloth who is gauging whether to expand its hunting to the village.
Fungal Infestation: A wicked druid has been cultivating an array of fungal creatures within the damp sewers of a city that she sees as an affront to nature. Once the time is right, she unleashes the fungal horde that is headed by gluttonous mycoloths. While most are basic, she has already fed interlopers and the like to some of them, making them large enough to expand the horde with saprolings.
As an added bonus, here's some real basic saprolings I made for my versions of the monster.
