I came up with the idea for this monster when talking to a friend about a primeval setting he was using. The lebrean ooze (if you couldn't guess from its name) is a tar-based ooze that uses the bones of the prey it consumes as weapons and armor. Oozes are interesting to design as more often then not, they're getting hit by any attack that isn't a critical failure. So balancing that with the right amount of HP and resistances can be touch.
Named after the La Brea Tar Pits, this creature relies largely on ambush tactics to hunt, at least until they can catch a creature to use the bones of. Its slow burn ability and the toxic fumes it emits when on fire is based on some actual characteristics of tar.
Pathfinder 1e:
I'm a little worried about the wording of the host skeleton ability - it makes sense to me as the person who wrote it but it might not be as clear to somebody reading it. Please give me your thoughts on it and if I need to make it clearer!
Pathfinder 2e version:
Blue's D&D 5e Version:
I'm going to start including a new section that details ways the featured creature could be used in fun and interesting encounters. Please lemme know what you think!
ENCOUNTER HOOKS
Hostile Fossils: The adventurers are exploring a necromancer’s demesne when they come across a lebrean ooze. When they finally beat it off of the host skeleton, the bones suddenly rattle and come together to form a skeleton – forcing the party to now fight a battle on two fronts.
Big-Boned:A lebrean ooze managed to find the corpse of a dead dragon or other immense creature that it has incorporated into its host skeleton. The power of this form has led it on a series of successful hunts, leading to it growing larger and larger. The lebrean ooze has grown to proportions befitting its host skeleton, swelling into a kaiju-sized ooze that can threaten entire settlements.
As always, feel free to share your thoughts. Let me know what I can improve on. Have a Monstrous Monday!
