Monster Monday - Goss Harag

Wind blew flurries of snow through the dark night as the aged fighter sat at the edge of the cave that he and his teammates had taken residence in during their trek. His turn to stand guard had come up and he watched with his bow drawn, one hand never straying too far from the flail at his waist. The bright moon overhead painted the mountain in a silvery light and if the jaded man were a bit younger, he might be better able to appreciate the beauty. Instead, his senses were focused on everything else – especially when he heard the crunch of snow underfoot. He nocked an arrow in a blur, scouring in the darkness as he kicked backwards, knocking a stone into one of his sleeping companions, rousing them. As the other three stirred awake, the fighter picked out something in the darkness – a pair of pinpricks of reflective light watching him with a soulless stare. Abandoning any attempt of subtlety, he called out to his companions as the eyes surged forward, the goss harag stampeding into the light as it hefted its frigid blade aloft.

Sorry for the late post, folks, had issues with the internet this morning - a seems to be customary - and then it was a long day at work. I still have other things to do tonight, so I'm gonna skip over a bunch of the description of stuff to get this posted.

Pathfinder 1e:

One thing I will say, is that I really wanted to play the slasher-esque feel that the goss harag has with his PF2e version. I mostly sought to do that with its Brutal Butcher and Chilling Approach abilities, the latter based off of a special interaction that goss harag will have with a stunned player while he has a sword.

Pathfinder 2e:

Blue's D&D 5e:

ENCOUNTER HOOKS

Cold as Ice: An isolated mountain town has been struggling following the disappearance of its hunters and other members. The heroes are tasked with investigating the disappearances and requires them to venture into the harsh environments to try to find evidence of the missing people. The mountain proves itself a hard enough environment to survive in but it’s not the only threat. As the heroes journey deeper into the inhospitable cold, the more aware members of the party begin to get the sense that they are being watched and if they pursue that sensation, they suddenly find themselves pitted against a goss harag. The brutal creature attempts to await for the party members to grow weaker from the cold or for the party to start to separate, hunting them like a slasher through its home like it had all the townsfolk before them.

Mama Bear: A particularly ornery goss harag has taken up residence in a mountain pass, blocking travelers from getting through there and endangering communities beyond it. When the heroes are tasked with slaying the creature, they discover that it is a mother with cubs. Most officials are fine with the heroes putting the young beasts to death, believing that they will just grow into more monsters. This hook works better with players that feel some measure of compassion for defenseless creatures or those that might be interested in somehow befriending and caring a savage beast.
