The ground trembles as the sounds of footsteps thunder through the air, sowing unease among the assembled forces. When the dark beast finally emerges from the mountain pass, its immense and savage form is enough to cause some of them begin to step back. Black tar spills and splashes from its body as it rears back on its hind legs, an orange glow igniting along its underbelly. At a cry from the captain, arrows and other missiles begin to soar towards the looming gogmazios but they strike against the hardened oil before a beam of fire lances towards the troop.
This was a request I received that I was very eager to tackle after doing some research on the creature. A tar-dripping dragon is a neat basis to work with and I tried to do the most I could with it. While the MH crew uses the term 'dragon' quite liberally, I did decide to make the gogmazios an actual dragon with abilities from the true dragons. Its first ability to come up is its tarry trail to mimic its ability to leave patches of tar around it that slow people down. The best way to replicate it, despite just leaving these patches, was as an aura for me. I managed to also include the burning aspect of it, but had to specify that they didn't damage the gogmazios. There's no thematic way it makes sense, but for the sake of the gogmazios's existence, we kind of need it. Because while the gogmazios has plenty of resistance to physical damage, he is vulnerable to fire.
I went with average maneuverability for its fly speed because it's already taking a penalty to it for its size but it isn't what I would call a good flyer. Its adhesion ability is based off of the mimic while its crush and tail sweep powers come from being a true dragon - as does the damage on its bite. The breath weapon is a traditional dragon feature, but I tried to spice it up a bit and get the features of the gogmazios's breath weapon by having it explode in an area at the end of its range. I hope the wording for that ability is clear, I know I was having trouble getting the point across with my first iteration of it. The gogmazios can also unleash a stream of flammable tar with its tar expulsion, setting people up for its breath weapon. For feats, I picked up some that lets it fly better and release powerful winds with its flapping as well as means for it to destroy objects so that it can destroy fortifications with greater ease.
Pathfinder 1e:
There's nothing too different about the 2e gogmazios though since I didn't feel tail sweep and crush were super important to it, I allowed them to be swapped out with Draconic Frenzy and Draconic Momentum.

ENCOUNTER HOOKS
In Gog We Trust: Shortly before a decisive battle between two forces, subversive elements of one creep into the other to rouse a sleeping gogmazios, driving it towards the armory of their enemies to devour their gunpowder. The heroes are swiftly rallied to repel the beast while the forces prepare for war and while they can face it anywhere they want, they are given access to a ruined fort in the path of the gogmazios. Despite falling out of use, the fort has several armaments that they can bring against the vast dragon. Alternatively, canny players might devise a method to somehow drive the gogmazios towards their foes instead. If they are able to communicate with it, they might even be able to ride the beast into battle, manning the siege engines still stuck to its sticky body.
Check out this awesome gogmazios art by Halcyon450. Thought about using it for the page, but I didn't like having the background.
We've got an original monster scheduled for next week that I'm eager to share. We have a Monster Monday Discord where we chat about stuff we're homebrewing, across a swath of systems, and just general stuff, and we also have a Twitter where you can see teasers for upcoming posts.
Have a Monstrous Monday!
