This is another twofer - a monster with its more matured version hailing from the Monster Hunter franchise. I'm still working on doing lower-levelled monsters though I have some mid to bigger ones coming up. I am also eagerly awaiting Rise because I'm excited to build stat blocks for a couple of those monsters - tetranadon and goss harag are definitely at the top of my list. But, until those come around, Monster Hunter has plenty of fun other monsters to work with such as the girros and its big brother, the great girros!
Given their lack of more supernatural abilities, I opted to make the girros animals though given their usual habitat, I included darkvision among their senses. I gave them some resistance to poison to reflect their ability to survive in the effluvium but learned that the young girros are apparently vulnerable to electricity. Curiously, the great girros becomes immune to electricity and replaces that weakness with one to cold. The regular girros are limited to their bite, which still carries paralytic properties. Meanwhile, the great girros accompanies its bite with a tail slap and receives a ranged spit that is only able to paralyze people. Finally, the great girros can unleash a commanding shriek to command its girros minions to represent its ability in game to unleash a roar that prompts nearby girros into leaping at hunters.
Pathfinder 1e:
There isn't too much different about the PF2e version of the girros. They keep the attack with paralysis as well as the weakness to electricity. Instead of giving a bonus on saves against poisons, I just gave the girros resistance to it. As always, I like giving monsters I build some unique reactions and opted to give it the Flare Hood reaction so that it can terrify creatures that draw close to it. I built Commanding Bellow as a two-action ability since it gives every girros in range a reaction though part of me wonders if I should have it be a single-action since it can only use it once every few rounds. I think it's balanced as it, but lemme know what you guys think!
Pathfinder 2e:
Blue's D&D 5e Version:
ENCOUNTER HOOKS
Viper Pit: A group of girros have taken up residence in a mine after the workers within accidentally opened up a pocket of toxic gas. The mine has been closed until the girros are cleared out, leading to the owners to hire the heroes to go into the mines and remove the infestation. Several of the tunnels have become unstable or have been filled with the toxic gas, making it difficult for the heroes to navigate through them. The girros lurk in packs and a great girros leads them, but they may not be the only monsters within the mines. Additionally, there may be miners trapped within that the heroes must find a way to save.
Now including Blue's D&D 5e version! Next week is an original monster that I am very excited to share.
Have a Monstrous Monday!
