Monster Monday - Bazelgeuse

Updated: Feb 24, 2021

I only really started playing any of the Monster Hunter games with World, but I really enjoy the gameplay, aesthetics, and, of course, the monsters. I have done a couple monsters from the franchise, but this will be the first I have posted here. So please check out the B-52 Bomber of monsters, the bazelgeuse!

Design-wise, dragon was a pretty obvious choice for the bazelgeuse though, unlike typical dragons, I refrained from giving it immunity to paralysis or sleep. Its breath weapon isn't as large for a dragon of its threat level because of its explosive scales.

Pathfinder 1e:

For the 2e version, I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to do its carpet bomb ability but given that it doesn't do damage and only sets up for later damage, having it be a single made if feel the most balanced. Looking at some other creatures in 2e, I liked the Wing Deflection some of the others dragons had and the Tail Sweep from the brachiosaurus. The Divebomb is slightly based off of the crush ability that true dragons from 1e had.

Pathfinder 2e:

And here's Blue's work for D&D 5e (https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/XSVlrnPq):

ENCOUNTER HOOKS

No Man’s Land: An army of would-be conquerors have managed to train a bazelgeuse that they use as a siege weapon. They sit upon a distant ridge as their war beasts conducts periodic raids on the city and any band that tries to cross the plains to the enemy force. Before a battle can be fought, the bazelgeuse must be brought down and defeated.

Bombs Away: The heroes need passage through a forest of the dryads who have been suffering the traditional hunting methods of a bazelgeuse. Their magic is largely useless against the beast that typically stays out of the way of their enchanted flora. The dryads will allow the heroes passage but only if they can slay or otherwise draw it away from the forest and to somewhere else it can hunt.

Lemme know what you think. I will undoubtedly have more beasties from Monster Hunter in the future, and if there's any in particular you might like to see, tell me.

Have a Monstrous Monday!
