Monster Monday - Anjanath

Updated: Jun 17, 2021

While I'm still getting settled after moving, and I'm gonna be moving again before too long, I'm gonna post some older monsters that I've statted up but haven't posted here before. This guy was my first big challenge in Monster Hunter World (that stupid mile high hit box when he charges), so please check out the T. rex with the worst case of the sniffles - the anjanath!

The anjanath is kinda standard as big lizards go, so I based a good bit of my work on it off of Pathfinder's Tyrannosaurus rex, but I quite obviously didn't want to just copy it. Its breath weapon and rage ability helped set it apart, but I also brought in the crush ability that true dragons get and gave it powerful leaper for the crazy jumps it makes from across the map to land on me. Finally, I added a home-cooked ability - thrash. I've used thrash for a few of my creatures and think it's a fun ability but it might be worded a little weirdly. Please give me your thoughts on it and on the new format I'm trying out!

Pathfinder 1e Version (made in Microsoft Word):

Bringing this monster over to Pathfinder 2e was pretty straightforward. I ultimately decided that thrash fit best as a 2-action ability, since it can potentially harm two creatures at once, but again, lemme know your thoughts on that. I'm not completely sold on it. I did run into some formatting issues with the new site I was using (GMBinder) where I wasn't able to bold other words in the stat block. Still, this is closer to the 2e Bestiary, so I like how it looks.

Pathfinder 2e Version:

ENCOUNTER HOOKS

King of the Hill: An anjanath has been attacking caravans along a road outside of its typical habitat. When the heroes confront it, they discover it has sustained numerous scars that they can identify came from some other beast. Something forced the anjanath out of its usual habitat, and something that strong is going to expand its territory before too long. Alternatively, you could run the anjanath is the invasive apex predator and another creature being the impetus.

Hot and Cold: Fires have begun to crop up in the nearby forest and are getting dangerously close to crops and fields. When the heroes are tasked with investigating this serial arsonist, they ultimately track down a terribly ill anjanath that has lost the use of its scent and is intermittently unleashing gouts of flames with its sneezing. The heroes could slay it or the sickly creature could be unusually peaceable and allow a nature-oriented character to calm and cure it.

Have a Monstrous Monday!
