Holiday Horror - Raffikin

Updated: Mar 25, 2021

Happy Easter! For the holiday, have a monster that isn't exactly a horror, the raffikin!

The art comes from the colored illustration of a miniature found here: https://www.beastsofwar.com/fantasy-wargaming/happy-easter-dark-sword-miniatures/

I couldn't find an actual artist to credit, so if anybody else does, please lemme know and I will make sure to update the stat block! I wasn't quite sure what to do for an Easter-based monster, but knew I wanted to do something with the eggs. As I was thinking on that idea and the wonder related to eggs, I ended up settling on the idea of doing a celestial, which is a type of creature I haven't done before. Building on the sense of whimsy and wonderment about Easter, I decided to make a celestial that styles itself as a guardian of such things and the CG alignment of azatas seemed like the best fit for that idea.

Pathfinder 1e Version

Honestly, it was kind of easier to make the 2e version of this monster, especially when it comes to assigning damage for its abilities. However, I ran into an issue I often have with converting spell-like abilities into innate spells - the lack of spells in 2e. And I mean part of me appreciates the reduced archive panic, but 1e has a spell for almost every instance, which is nice.

Pathfinder 2e Version:

Blue's D&D 5e Version:

ENCOUNTER HOOKS

Hare and Gone: A raffikin has been causing a stir about town with its pranks and agrees to stop on one condition: the heroes must find it in a game of hide and seek, and then catch it. The heroes must search out hiding spots, using various skill checks or roleplay. Upon finding it, the raffikin flees, leading the heroes on a chase to try to catch the sneaky azata that does honor its promise.

Noble to the End: A young girl carries something deadly within her, whether it be a plague or something worse, but a raffikin has sworn himself to protect her. The heroes must find the duo and take the girl, but the raffikin is loath to let his ward be stolen away like that. They might be able to convince the raffikin that its for the best if the girl comes with them, but even then the raffikin is reluctant and must be thoroughly convinced.

I had fun with this, but tell me what you think. Have a happy Easter!
