Full Build Friday - Luna Snow

The last Marvel Rivals build was a bit of a mix between Pathfinder and Starfinder but this one is a bit more purely Starfinder. From my understanding, Luna's a pretty popular character, but I'm excited to explore her character through the lens of this system. As always, this build is conceptualized entirely in a vacuum, with choices made in my best attempt to fit the character. These choice may not hold up in a campaign with different themes and should be adjusted accordingly.

BUILD GOALS

o    A popstar from South Korea by the stage name of Luna, she gained cryokinetic abilities that allow her to wield damaging dark ice and restorative light ice

o    Following the incident, she became a hero by the name of Luna Snow

o    Passively, Luna restores health when using abilities such as Ice Arts or Absolute Zero while moving forward consistently allows her to skate, moving faster and jumping highe

o    Her basic attack summons shards of light and dark ice to respectively heal allies or damage enemies

o    Absolute Zero launches a ball of ice that damages and freezes an enemy in place

o    Share the Stage attaches an Idol Aura to an ally, increasing the healing that Luna grants them and causing a portion of healing she does to others to apply to them as well

o    Ice Arts fires shards that pierce through heroes, damaging enemies and healing allies

o    Her ultimate is Fate of Both Worlds, which produces an aura that can heal allies or boost their damage

o    Some of her team-ups can empower the attacks of allies with ice while the Frozen Chi team-up grants her a knock-back and slowing effect

Summary of Goals: There’s a heavy focus on healing in Luna’s kit and the ice theme will be highly important in representing her as well. On top of supporting her allies through healing them and locking down enemies, she also needs a way to enhance the damage of her allies as we see through several of her abilities.

I wanted to use an ancestry that could better demonstrate Luna Snow’s ability as a songstress, but human once again ended up being the best fit. Fortunately, I did manage to mix things up a bit by using the changeling ancestry, which grants her low-light vision and beautifully represents the heterochromia that the character actually has. She can further explore her character through the Snow May lineage, making her more capable of trekking through snow and more resistant to it. Another perfect fit for her is the icon background, which serves to reference her role as a popstar and idol and comes with Impressive Performance, just like half the backgrounds that grant training in Performance already do. To complete the core of our cryokinetic crooner, Luna lands on the mystic class. This is unfortunately a Wisdom-based class even if Charisma would have suited her better, but it honestly works out very well for her. The mystic comes with the vitality network feature so that Luna can keep her allies healed up with ease, per her Light Ice, and for the sake of her musical inclinations, she selects the rhythm connection. While this has some music themed spells – focus and otherwise – it also provides her with the primal spell list, which is where she’ll pull her cold-based spells from, such as frostbite and purifying icicle. She will also want to pick up heal as a spell so that she has an option other than just her vitality network. As a note, the anthem epiphany spell boosts attack and damage rolls, which isn’t a bad representation of the damage-amping aspects of her Fate of Both Worlds.

While I don’t know Luna’s religion, she could seriously benefit from a Cleric Dedication and preferably have a deity that will grant her access to the healing domain. She doesn’t make use of that yet, but she will take Basic Dogma to gain Communal Healing so that she can share healing with another ally – similar to how the ally that she is Sharing the Stage with will receive healing even when she’s targeting somebody else. With her skill feats, she gets Quick Jump so that she can jump faster and match the enhanced jump that she receives from Smooth Skate, but then she goes back to her Performance feats with Fascinating Performance. She does get another song-based feat here, but before she takes it, she needs Adopted Ancestry for the goblin ancestry, which is an absolutely bizarre choice for such a character, but one that will lead to her getting Goblin Song. This gives her another way of using the Performance skill and can set her up to use her spells that target Will saves or aid her allies. For the spells this block, she mainly just grabs a bunch of cold-based spells but one of note here is moonlight ray. While this doesn’t heal creatures, I think the fact that it attempts to counteract darkness and that it deals extra damage to unholy creatures matches very nicely with her use of Light Ice. There is also a small little increase to Nature, which will come up in the next block.

LEVEL 10

As I said, she immediately makes use of that expert Nature to take New Epiphany for an elemental connection. This will allow her to create elemental weapons, forging a water weapon that deals extra cold damage inspired by her team-up with Jeff and the ice that she adds to his attacks. Through Radiant Bond, she can use Transfer Vitality to heal multiple creatures at once, which is inspired by the aura healing of her Fate of Both Worlds ultimate and is something she can potentially pump out every round. She rounds out her class feats here with Advanced Epiphany to gain shuffle repeat, which gives her a way of empowering a singular foe per her Fate of Both Worlds. Unfortunately, the fact that it’s limited to a single creature is a bit disappointing. She mostly sticks to Performance skill feats this round with Distracting Performance and Virtuosic Performer, but she does take a quick dip into Athletics for Powerful Leap based on the enhanced jumps granted by her Smooth Skate. She also gets two ancestry feats this block thanks to Ancestral Paragon, which leads to Cooperative Nature since as a strategist, she’s all about helping others. Invoke the Elements is a bit less cozy as it allows her to summon swirling snow around her that provides concealment and damages enemies that draw too close, inspired by the Frozen Chi team-up ability she acquires with Iron Fist.

                Cloak of light is another very short-ranged effect, but it will grant healing to allies near her, so it’s another way to cover her ultimate. There’s also mantle of the frozen heart, which uniquely comes with the ice glide feature to provide her with the speed buff of Smooth Skate.

Through an Advanced Dogma, Luna gains Domain Initiate and takes that healing domain I talked about earlier to gain the healer’s blessing focus spell. This covers the other aspect of Share the Stage by granting the target enhanced healing whenever they are targeted by such an effect. She’s back to mystic with Greater Epiphany to gain remix, which grants quickened as a focus spell and a powerful buffing effect even if she has to Sustain each round. Rapid Mantel just takes advantage of her enhanced Athletics over her Reflex saving throw whereas Talent Envy is a very neat skill feat that I don’t think I’ve ever used before. Intimidation doesn’t quite seem right for Luna Snow, but it's mechanically useful and this is a neat feat, so I wanted to demonstrate it here just a bit. Her general feats lean into her mobility with Fleet and Feather Step whereas her Cooperative Soul ancestry feat simply expands out of her Cooperative Nature. There’s a good range of spells at this block we’ll have to discuss. For example, field of life creates an area that provides healing each round to those within per her Fate of Both Worlds, but it doesn’t have an aura like this ability does. She also gains frost pillar and absolute zero (super fittingly named) to freeze people in place, per her Absolute Zero, but the latter is a big area rather than a single target. I also included frigid flurry and arctic rift since they’re line effects akin to her Ice Arts though obviously these won’t be healing any allies caught in them.

Given the number of sustain spells that Luna has (such as any of her epiphany spells, her field of life, and ice storm), Effortless Concentration feels like a must have, especially when she picks up vitality web as yet another way to resemble the healing of her Fate of Both Worlds. Given the heavy focus on healing in her kit, I had her take up Enlightenment as her final class feat as it vastly enhances her vitality network and how swiftly it refreshes. Legendary Performer is an obvious pick-up whereas Cloud Jump just takes advantage of her Athletics investment and the jump of her Smooth Skate. She also slips in Intimidating Glare to add some extra functionality to the likes of Envy Talent. In addition to Legendary Performer covering her profession as an idol, she has A Home in Every Port covering her fame to the point where she can go anywhere and have somebody willing to take her in. She also has Heroic Presence, which is a feat that I’ve complained about in the past, but actually suits Luna Snow quite nicely this time around.

FREE ARCHETYPE SUGGESTIONS: You could expand on the Cleric Dedication a bit, likely taking some Basic Cleric Spellcasting for more spells, but I would resist the urge to go for a Bard Dedication. It seems like a solid fit, but we really got all the bard type things we wanted out of her rhythm connection, which means a much better choice can be found in the form of a Celebrity Dedication. This is largely flavor-based and comes with some legitimately fun feats such as Big Debut, Command Attention, and Perfect Pitch – the latter of which works particularly nicely for a caster!

 

BUILD CONCLUSION

Luna Snow is a changeling human mystic with a rhythm connection and a background as an icon since she is a world famous popstar, which is further demonstrated by her Legendary Performer and A Home in Every Port feats. Through her heritage, she gains the Snow May lineage as an initial reference to her cryokinetic abilities which is further covered by her primal spell list and the cold spells that it provides. One of those spells is mantle of the frozen heart, which comes with the ice glide option based off of her passive and is further covered by a significant investment in Athletics with feats such as Powerful Leap and Cloud Jump. Her light ice comes from spell such as rousing splash or heal while her dark ice can reliably be created through frostbite or any number of other cold-based spells. For the freezing effects of her Absolute Zero, we actually have a spell of the same name or the more singularly focused frozen pillar to stop an enemy dead in their tracks. She has to tap into a Cleric Dedication to get some of the effects of her Share the Stage through Communal Healing and healer's blessing, but she returns to her primal spells for the likes of frigid flurry or arctic rift to create line effects akin to her Ice Arts - though these certainly won't be healing her allies as this ability is meant to. To recreate the healing of her Fate of Both Worlds, she can draw up a field of life or simply drop some three actions heals. As for the damage increase it can alternate to, we'll be looking at her anthem or shuffle repeat from her epiphany spells. Also along those lines is elemental weapons inspired by her team-up ability with Jeff and then Invoke the Elements of her changeling ancestry for the Frozen Chi team-up, granted to her by Iron Fist.

 

Skating into the skirmish, this songstress supreme sends a spray of sleet and snow at sinister suspects while supporting her squad with sweet serenades that send subzero supplements and shore up their slacking salubriousness.
